How to Change Your Whirlpool® Refrigerator Water Filter

by Dr. Jonathan Doyle - Updated March 13, 2022
There are three conditions we consider necessary to life, including air, water, and sunlight. While these aspects may be necessary to life, the ability to survive without each one becomes significantly difficult with time. For example, although you can live anywhere between two to three weeks without food, you will die of dehydration if you lose 15% of your body water.
As we continue to see improvements to living standards, residents begin pay more attention to their overall health. Water quality is one of the largest issues that has become an unavoidable topic, involving poor water standards, contaminants, filtration, and more.

Why You Should Replace Your Whirlpool® Refrigerator Water Filter?

Refrigerators manufactured by Whirlpool® feature a water filter (where applicable) that needs replacement every six months, if not sooner, depending on use. Once you begin to let water filters in your fridge sit unreplaced for too long, the water will become tinged with a scent, cloudiness, and more. Before you begin noticing the aforementioned issue, or see black spots in your water, it’s imperative that you keep to a tight replacement schedule. Otherwise, you may begin to notice smaller ice cubes, water that’s slow to drain, and more.

What You Should Know Before Changing the Refrigerator Filter?

Please Note: It is normal to experience a bit of water overflow when changing the water filter in your fridge. The simplest solution is to grab a dry towel before beginning the process.
Also, it may be necessary to remove food or drinks temporarily, depending on the style and location of your fridge water filter cartridge.
Ensure the ice maker is turned off during the entire process, to prevent water from overflowing into the ice maker. This may involve disconnecting the water supply depending on the age of your refrigerator. Typically, this step is completely unnecessary, as the water supply shuts off automatically once the filter is removed. In most cases you simply have to turn the cartridge, pop it out, replace with a fresh filter, and twist into place.
