Celebrating World Water Day 2024: Water for Peace

To raise awareness of the value of fresh water, 22 March is an annual United Nations observance day. This day aims to raise awareness about the 2.2 billion people who don’t have access to clean water and to promote actions aimed at resolving the worldwide water crisis.

In response to this idea, the UN General Assembly passed resolution A/RES/47/193 on December 22, 1992, officially declaring March 22 as “World Day for Water,” celebrated yearly.

The first World Water Day event was held in 1993; since then, it has grown in recognition and reach. The day emphasises the vital importance of fresh water and supports the responsible handling of freshwater resources. World Water Day is an annual event promoting awareness of water-related problems and getting people to do something about the water crises around the world.

The history of World Water Day can be traced back to important events like the start of the “Water for Life Decade” in 2005, which aims to raise awareness of the UN’s water-focused programmes and stress the importance of women in water conservation activities (2005–2015).
